once a terrible sinner, but now, saved by the grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ....by His substitutionary work on the cross, as mentioned on our
Home Page. The Lord Jesus Christ has blessed me, along with my wonderful wife, Glocil, with a tremendous ministry, as a missionary to the people of the Philippine Islands. Glocil and I are praying and working for the people of the Philippines, asking the Lord to continue to use us to spread the good news,
the Gospel of Jesus Christ, throughout the Philippine Islands, to the
poor lost souls in the poorest areas that still have no Christian
churches and have had little to no evangelization because of the
ignorance and poverty of the people there. Although there is a lot of missionary activity in the Philippines, there are still many poor places that seem to not be counted worthy by the large, well financed missions, and there are probably thousands of people in the Philippines who pass through the door of death into a hellacious eternity of fires, heat and torment because they die without Christ. Our ministry in Lupon has been blessed to be used by God to lead two people this last year to the Lord within weeks and hours of their deaths! As a matter of fact, all of the native staff in Lupon are fruits of our ministry, through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our ministry in the Philippines began in the fall of 2003. During a visit there, we conducted Home Bible Studies and then began a Bible School to teach adults to be missionaries to their own people. We thought that they would then become missionaries and would travel far and wide, covering the whole nation, and that our Bible College would continue to teach new students, who would join in the missionary effort. It seems that God had a different and, of course, a better idea. He gave us difficulty getting the first Bible School class trained, and it became increasingly difficult to find suitable native teachers for the school. Just at the time we finally had our first class trained and ready to function as missionaries, the Lord blessed us with some very, very poor kids, all from the Lupon area. The Lord also blessed us with the New England Primer which was America's primary textbook for young American students from the year 1690 until 1900.The New England Primer was very successful in teaching American youngsters to read and write English, as well as teach them the Gospel of Jesus Christ and good basic Christian behavior for over 200 years, so we knew it could do the same thing for Filipino kids. The end result is that we now have a small school, with a local staff of nine dedicated brethren who teach the young children before they start public school. The school is hosted in the home of two of the staff members, who also do the cooking, since hunger is a big problem in the Philippines. Our kids get food for the soul, as well as food for the body on each school day. with my wonderful wife,Glocil, ![]() So, in His infinite wisdom and abundant grace, the Lord brought a mission field to us at the location of the original Bible College! We still have our vision of sending out missionaries all over the island of Mindanao and the Philippine nation. At present, in the fall of 2008, we are still waiting for the means, both in terms of people and monetary resources, while still teaching young children. We also hope to increase our children's ministry in Lupon. The kids that we are teaching are so poor that they may never get a fromal education, so the teaching and nutrition that we're priveleged to give them will, by the grace of God, enable them to reach beyond their linguistically isolated pocket of ignorance to become competitive in the world, through their ability to use the internet and read books to acquire learning and skills that will give them a fighting chance at a decent life. It is our prayer that the Lord will give these kids jobs as missionaries when they are old enough to share the Gospel clearly and correctly. Our prayers have begun to be answered already, as some of our children that we are teaching are taking the Gospel back to their parents and families. Some of the adult family members have come to our center to ask questions and see the environment that has gotten their children so excited! Our Christian Children's Center, where we teach the kids is located in Lupon, Davao (Da-vow) Oriental on the large southern island of Mindanao (Min-dan-ow). Mindanao is the large green island on the map at right. We are endeavoring to spread our work all over Mindanao, and eventually throughout the Philippines, where isolation and poverty have, prevented missionaries from sharing the good news with the people in those out of the way places. The Republic of the Philippines contains over 7,000 (yes, thousand) islands, many of which are very primitive and too small to appear on the map. The year 2007 was very eventful for us. Not only did our Bible College students complete their course of instruction and become ready to share the Gospel, conduct prayer meetings and informal Bible studies, but they are also teaching the kids in a classroom environment. What great joy all this is! Apparently, the Lord is opening up a "branch" of our ministry about 100 miles west of Lupon, through a dear brother who was saved through our preaching in 2004. Brother Alvin and his wife, Ellen were saved at about the same time, as a result of Glocil and I preaching the Gospel to them over and over again. Finally, it hit home and they both came to the Lord. They immediately became involved in basic, and then advanced Bible studies, and have been wearing out the internet with questions for us to answer. It is always a great joy to know a student you are teaching is diligent. You can tell they are diligent by the questions they ask! Now, in the last months of 2008, Alvin and Ellen have logged nearly two years of conducting Bible studies, prayer meetings and personal visitations with people in need in their home town of Toril, and the surrounding area. Alvin and Ellen have two beautiful daughters, Jinkai and Nikai, aged 12 and 8, respectively. These girls are a joy to be around and watch as they perform karaoke to Chistian hymns! As they say in the Philippines, "We Filipinos are fond of karaoke." Alvin works as a security guard at a large bank in Toril and has become known as "Pastor Alvin" because of his readiness to render Christian service and instruction to his co-workers and superiors alike. We are understanding all this as a signal from the Lord that we can expand our ministry to Alvin and Ellen's area as soon as necessary logistics are provided. We see this as a continuation of the answer to our prayers to be used to spread the Gospel throughout the Philippine Islands....all 7,000 of them. |
